ROMENGO GYPSY BAND (Hungary) Romengo's musicians embody the new Hungarian Olah gypsy generation. As their ancestors, they see that the oral tradition is perpetuated, while having a more eclectic musical research. Heir to an authentic and original music, with prevalent polyphonic singing (in the gypsy language) and vocal games, the group shows to the culture's vitality. The Olah Gypsy tradition Romengo musicians sing their own compositions as well as songs handed down, generation to generation, by their Lovar or Csurar families (seller of horses and sharpener of knives). Those songs relate Rom's life: families, children, love, deceits, travelling and God are the themes of choice. Modestly called to mind in everyday life, those themes echo back to the entire gypsy community. Songs were traditionally accompanied on kitchen utensils such as milk can and wooden spoons. This instrumentation brought Olahs to develop an amazing rhythmical energy; especially in use of voice, with “szajbogozes” (oral bass) and “pergetes” (kind of “scat” singing). Romengo's music offers on stage rare emotions as much for a well known tradition as the performers sincerity and evolving inspiration. [ go Back ] [ go Home ] [ go Top] [ login media ] |
